So parked means parked i.e. parked at the gate, parked in your driveway (car) parked at the shopping centre etc
Parked up means parked long term i.e. parked up at Alice Springs, to put a vehicle in a place where it can stay for some time

Parked = short term
Parked up = long term

On the same topic, why do most Australian airlines say ".....flight through to Sydney"? Surely it's the same context as "going to the shops". No one says "I'm going through to the shops"
